This presentation will provide an overview of core knowledge that can empower educators who work with struggling readers. We will review essential theories of reading, factors that impact reading outcomes, and common myths or misconceptions often subscribed to. Attendees will learn about frameworks that can guide understanding of reading difficulties, updates to counter common misconceptions, and resources to support practice.

We will review common questions including whether specific text font is recommended, balancing print and digital reading opportunities, whether dyslexia is about letter reversals or lower IQ, and if reading challenges can be recognized before late elementary school years. Our discussion will focus on the role of librarians and resources they can offer their communities.
