Keynote: Reading & Brain Plasticity: Unpacking the Science of Reading Gains and Learning Loss
Thursday August 8, 2024 8:00am - 9:30am HST
The session will focus on reading development in response to the literacy experiences a child may have. We will explore brain plasticity, the ability to adapt based on learning, that allows each student to become a reader. We will discuss how the reading brain changes over time based on two common experiences: in relation to reading interventions as well as in response to suspended formal reading instruction. Effective reading instruction improves a reader's skills while in parallel rewiring the reading brain. Suspended formal instruction for reading can happen in expected ways, such as summer vacations, as well as through unplanned experiences, such as during COVID-19 interruptions. We will review current research on student characteristics associated with reading gains over time, as well as with 'learning loss' in reading. We will discuss how libraries can play an important role, during the school year and when school is not in session, for fostering reading progress.

A Safe Space to Ignite: The Library as Inclusive Third Place
Thursday August 8, 2024 12:35pm - 1:50pm HST
Sociologist Ray Oldenburg coined the term “third place,” which refers to “places where people spend time between home (‘first’ place) and work (‘second’ place). They are locations where we exchange ideas, have a good time, and build relationships” (Butler and Diaz). For our students, the second place could be considered the classroom, the site of their daily work. The school library, then, could be considered a third place, where students find connection. As Butler and Diaz note, third places build communities because they are levelers of social class and background, and encourage informal conversation, serving as a living room where people feel comfortable to spend unstructured time doing what makes them happy.

In this session I would like to share with other library professionals the ways in which I have been re-creating our library at Waipahu Intermediate into a third place. Three focus areas are:
  • Physical Space (furniture, layout, displays, passive programming)
  • Student Voice & Choice
  • Cultural & Linguistic Inclusiveness
I will share examples of collecting data, collaborating with teachers, and incorporating student work and ideas to shape our library culture.

Risk and Resilience For Struggling Readers: Exploring Socioemotional Skills and Executive Function
Thursday August 8, 2024 12:35pm - 1:50pm HST
We will review risk and resilience factors for students who struggle with reading acquisition due to a reading disability, disadvantaged background, or both. Models of resilience offer promising malleable factors that can positively impact reading outcomes including social emotional learning skills (SELS) and executive function (EF). SELS underlie the ability to be available to learn and may foster resilience through growth mindset, self-management, self-efficacy, and social awareness. EF describes the skills underlying the ability to regulate cognition, emotion, and behavior. Risk factors for reading difficulty will also be reviewed. We will discuss building capacity to leverage protective factors and minimize risk factors in fostering positive reading growth for vulnerable students in the context of librarians and libraries.

The Essential Era of Teacher Librarians: Using an Elementary (PreK-5) Library Curriculum with Learning Objectives to Demonstrate the Vital Role of Teacher Librarians in Hawai’i Elementary Schools
Friday August 9, 2024 12:35pm - 1:50pm HST
Core curriculum areas including ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies have specific learning goals aligned to state and national standards. Before now, detailed and specific learning objectives for library programming were often missing from local and state guidelines. Clear evidence of instructional goals and skills are vital in library programming so that administrators see and value teacher librarians as essential and not a luxury.

Learn about the continuum of specific library objectives and skills, high quality resources, and detailed lesson plans that Lincoln (NE) Public Schools Library Services developed for PreK-5. Creative Commons grants us permission to use these essential materials, in a one-stop spot format, adaptable to your own library program!
